Defense propels Omak to victories

Brewster chews up Medical Lake

— The Okanogan High School girls basketball team jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back in beating Colville, 63-40, in a non-league game Saturday.

“I’m just seeing our team being real active,” Okanogan coach Bryan Boesel said after improving to 4-0. “We have eight or nine girls that are playing our up-tempo game right now. We can give people a quick rest and not slow down.”

Jill Townsend led all scorers with 18 points, 11 coming in the first half for Okanogan.

Cameron Moses made three 3-pointers before finishing with 13 points. Jordyn Boesel scored 9 of her 12 points in the second half.

Okanogan (4-0) is at Cascade (4-0) on Friday.

CHELAN – Chelan blew open a fairly close game with a strong fourth quarter before beating Oroville, 42-21, in a non-league game Saturday.

Chelan led 21-13 at the half, with 6-1 post Emma Stockholm scoring 19 of the Goats points.

“They are big, they are very big,” Oroville coach Mike Bourn said. “(Stockholm) was a load for us. We don’t have anybody to match up with her.”

Stockholm finished with 27 points, 20 rebounds (11 defensive), 4 blocks and 6 assists.

“We stuck with them the first quarter,” Bourn said. “We went to a triangle-and-two against Stockholm and they hit four 3-pointers on us.”

Lily Hilderbrand finished with 10 points (several from outside) and 14 rebounds for Oroville.

The Goats went on a 14-5 run in the final quarter.

Oroville (2-1) next plays Jan. 10 at Pateros (3-1).

MOSES LAKE – Pateros, behind the 18 points of Ashton Steggall and 14 points of Katarina Wilson, walloped Columbia Basin Secondary School, 57-3, on Friday.

“I thought we moved the ball well on offense and our denial defense produced 27 steals,” Pateros coach Sheri Mortimer said.

Pateros (3-1) will compete Wednesday at the North-Central Washington Basketball Showcase at Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave., Wenatchee.

The girls take on Manson (0-2) at 3:30 p.m. The Pateros boys follow at 5 p.m.

Pateros goes to Lake Roosevelt (0-3) on Friday.

The Lake Roosevelt girls basketball team will take on an alumni team in a charity game at 6 p.m. Saturday at the high school, 500 Civic Way.

MEDICAL LAKE – Brewster improved to 4-0 overall with a 75-28 blasting of Medical Lake in a non-league game Saturday.

Monica Landdeck scored 28 points, Chandler Smith 21 and Brette Boesel 16 for the Bears.

No one for Medical Lake scored in double figures.

Brewster (4-0) is at Quincy (2-3) on Thursday and hosts Omak (4-1) on Friday.

WHITE SWAN – White Swan beat Bridgeport, 56-16, on Saturday.

Emily Botkin of White Swan scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter as the Cougars built an insurmountable 26-2 lead.

Jennifer Salazar scored 5 points to lead the Mustangs, who did not score in the second quarter.

Bridgeport (0-2) next plays at the Waterville Tournament on Dec. 27.

The Tigers, who are 2-0 in the Northeast 1B League, led 27-9 at halftime.

Republic (4-0) is at Kettle Falls (5-0) in a non-league game Wednesday.

Inchelium (0-2) is at the Wellpinit Tournament set for Dec. 20-21.

Kayleona Fanning added 12 points and Haleigh Gibson 11 points.

Odessa-Harrington (2-2) is at Curlew (4-1) on Saturday.

“It was our best effort of the young season,” Oroville coach Mike Bourn said. “Defensively, we had all eight girls at 100 percent. They were playing defense like we wanted them to.”

Lily Hilderbrand scored 12 points for Oroville.

Kathryn Cleman led Tonasket with 5 points.

Sister Lindsey Gibson scored 14 points. Kayleona Fanning sank 11 points.

Republic led 37-36 after three quarters before going on a 19-11 fourth quarter run.

OMAK – Omak used a stifling pressure defense to take out Liberty Bell, 68-15, in a non-league game Thursday.

The Pioneers led 46-8 at the half and did not allow a point in the fourth quarter.

Shawnee Covington scored 26 points for Omak. Kaelyn Marchand and Baelie Meese each scored 14 points.

Sarina Williams scored 8 points for the Mountain Lions, which sport six freshmen on the varsity roster.

Liberty Bell will compete Friday at the North-Central Washington Basketball Showcase at Town Toyota Center, 1300 Walla Walla Ave., Wenatchee.

The Liberty Bell (0-2) girls take on Entiat (4-0) at 3:30 p.m. while the Mountain Lion boys take on Entiat at 5 p.m.
