BREWSTER The City Council amended Brewster’s six-year street plan in a special meeting last week to make room for projects with state grant funding.
With a Safe Routes to School grant of $282,700, the city is making safety improvements on Bridge and Ferry streets the top priorities, Public Works Director Lynn Lawson said.
The projects will include new curbs, gutters and sidewalks “for a main route used by school children going to and from school across a busy (state) Highway 173,” Lawson said. That will be done from the Ferry Street intersection with state Highway 173, also known as Bridge Street, and from Bridge to Fourth streets. Completion is slated for 2015.
Also for Safe Routes to School, $105,000 will be spent on curbs, sidewalks and storm drains for Bridge Street from mileposts 10.93 to 11.99. The city is putting forth $10,000, and the rest will come from federal and state funds.
Work is expected to be finished in 2014.
