— Course records were set in both boys and girls varsity races during the Oroville Invitational on Oct. 19 at Osoyoos Lake Veterans Memorial Park.

“The finish line was a mad house during the boys varsity race,” Oroville coach Doug Kee said.

Quincy’s Spencer Elmore, who ran in fourth or fifth place until about a mile to go, charged to the lead at the finish. He won with a record 16-minute run on the three-mile course that drew a dozen teams.

Right behind were Liberty Bell’s Ben Klemmeck (16:04) and Liam Daily (16:06), who ran with Republic’s Duncan Forsman (16:34) for about half the race before taking over the lead.

“It was the same course that we’ve had for several years,” Kee said, a couple steep climbs that are crossed twice each. “The high school boys and girls races were both course records. I’m not sure about middle school.”

No. 6 state 1B/2B Liberty Bell won the boys team title with 36 points. No. 9 Republic was third.

The middle school boys race was even closer than boys varsity, with Omak’s Gideon Bolton getting the lead and win at the finish in 8:03.89. Liberty Bell’s Eli Nielsen was right there in second at 8:04.

Omak boys easily won the middle school team title (27 points) with four runners in the Top 5.

Oroville’s Sierra Speiker improved on her course record by more than a minute in easily cruising to the win in 17:42. That was 1 minute, 16 seconds better than her previous course record. Her record for three miles, set earlier on the flatter Omak course, is 17:10.4.
