Brewster climbs to Mount Baker crown

Curlew tops Tigers; challenges for first

MOUNT BAKER – Brewster went undefeated to win the 2013 Mount Baker Mountaineer Volleyball Invite on Oct. 26.

“The girls really found themselves out on the court,” Brewster coach Marcy Boesel said. “They battled hard all day long and refused to lose. It was a day of tremendous growth as individuals and as a team.”

The Bears in pool play won 25-20, 25-27 and 17-15 over Forest Ridge, 25-23, 25-22 and 15-11 over Blaine and 25-17, 25-11 and 15-11 over Meridian.

In the championship bracket, Brewster beat Bellingham 25-21, 25-21, Lakewood 25-21, 26-24 and Kent Lake 25-20 and 29-27.

OMAK – Omak blanked Cashmere, 3-0, in a league match Oct. 26.

Omak (8-5 overall, 8-5 league) closed out its regular season at Okanogan (4-8, 4-8) on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

QUINCY – Cascade knocked off Tonasket, 3-0, in a league match Oct. 26.

WATERVILLE – Waterville won, 3-1, over Liberty Bell in a non-league match on Oct. 26.

No stats were received.

Liberty Bell (10-3 overall, 5-2 league) finished its regular season at Lake Roosevelt (2-9, 1-5) on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

REPUBLIC – Curlew shocked Republic, 3-1, in a Northeast 1B League showdown between rivals Oct. 24.

The Cougars won 22-25, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-20.

The victory elevated Curlew into a position to tie, with a win over Northport on the final night Oct. 29, for the league title with Republic and Cusick.

Should a three-way tie occur, a pre-season draw would give Curlew the No. 1 seed in the post-season playoffs.

The Top 4 teams from the north take on the Top 4 teams from the south in district starting Thursday, Nov. 7.

Curlew and Republic were tied, 13-13, in the second set when Republic’s Alex Rollins took a knee to the cheek diving for a loose ball. Reports the next night at the homecoming game were she suffered a fractured cheek.

Columbia is at Republic for a non-league match on Saturday, Nov. 2.

OKANOGAN – Chelan shut out Okanogan, 3-0, in a league match Oct. 24.

The Goats prevailed 25-15, 25-8 and 25-4.

“Chelan’s team is great,” Okanogan coach Michelle Daling said. “Abby Phelps may be the best player in the league.”

Chelan doesn’t have a freshman on varsity.

Okanogan started two ninth graders and four on the varsity roster. There are 37 players in the Okanogan program.

“We have a lot of youth and inexperience,” Daling said.

Okanogan (4-8 overall, 4-8 league) closes out the regular season at Quincy (5-8, 5-7) on Saturday, Nov. 2.

WATERVILLE – Pateros got a good match from Waterville on Oct. 24, but the result remained the same for the Nannies.

Pateros (13-0 overall, 4-0 league) remained undefeated for the season and won the Central Washington 1B League for the second year with a 25-17, 25-17 and 25-21 win.

“It’s never easy to play Waterville at their house,” Pateros coach Gene Dowers said. “They’re tough, they’ve got a great crowd and this match determined the final league standings and the seedings into districts.”

Almira/Coulee-Hartline is at Pateros for a non-league match and senior night at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30.

OROVILLE – Bridgeport edged Oroville 25-19, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-16 in a league match Oct. 24.

“This was a disappointing loss for us,” Oroville coach Carrie Rise said. “Frankly, the team fell apart during the third and fourth game, with emotions running high in several of the players.”

Oroville (7-7 overall, 4-3 league) played at Manson (2-9, 0-6) in the Hornets final league match of the season.
