Okanogan baseball sweeps Lake Roosevelt

— COULEE DAM – Clay Ashworth made his dad smile last week by pitching a no-hit shutout against Lake Roosevelt on Saturday.

His father, Okanogan baseball coach Ed Ashworth, was ill over the weekend, which included his birthday Sunday.

His son worked hard for that grin by throwing 47 strikes in 81 pitches. He struck out 10, walked four and did not give up a run in a 10-0 victory that got the Bulldogs and his dad on the bus quickly.

“He was very strong throughout the game and kept fairly good command of his pitches,” coach Ed Ashworth said.

The younger Ashworth also was strong at the plate, going 2-4 with a triple and RBI.

“Overall, the weekend was positive for our young team,” said the coach. “Four freshmen started game two along with three sophomores and two juniors. We obviously have much to work on and as we continue to work hard and learn the varsity game our Bulldogs will be competitive in the dirt.”

Lake Roosevelt plated the minimum 15 batters and committed 11 errors.

Chance Garvin struck out 3, walked 3 and gave up 2 earned runs on 10 hits.

Okanogan (10) – Fingar 1BB, 1R, 4SB; Ashworth 2-4, RBI, 3B; Townsend 1-4, 2SB; Wood 1-3, 2R, SB; Carillo 1-3, R, RBI; Cotner 2R, SB; Super 1-3, 2R, RBI; Cate 1-3, R, RBI, SB.

Okanogan used three pitchers to notch a 9-5 victory in the opener.

Jacob Larson went the first four innings, striking out 8, giving up 1 hit and walking 6.

“Jacob needs to keep his walks down, but we were happy with his performance,” coach Ed Ashworth said. “He stayed strong throughout his four innings.”

Jim Townsend pitched two innings, striking out 6 and walking 3 while giving up 2 earned runs on one hit.

Cody Sumner closed, striking out one and giving up one earned run.

At the plate, Gabe Greene was 2-3 with 3 runs, 2 stolen bases and a double. Tyler Wood was 2-4 with an RBI.

“We put the ball in play and ran fast,” said the coach, noting the Bulldogs finished with give stolen bases. “This young group of Bulldogs competed well, but we still have a long road ahead of us.”

Devan Black pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Raiders, striking out 4, walking 8, and giving up 6 earned runs on 6 hits.
