SUMNER – Liberty Bell takes on Friday Harbor in one of two state 1B/2B semifinal girls soccer matches Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium at Sumner High School.
The Mountain Lions (16-4) play at 4 p.m. against the Wolverines (14-5), which are making their first-ever appearance at state.
No. 4 seeded Liberty Bell reached state by winning a sudden death shootout against No. 1 seeded Okanogan (17-5) on Nov. 15. That game was scoreless in regulation and two overtimes. Both teams tied, 4-4, in the five shot shoot before the match was decided on the sixth kick in sudden death.
The young Mountain Lions charge into state behind Central Washington B League MVP Mia Kennedy.
Last year Liberty Bell finished third in state – falling 7-0 to Bear Creek in the semifinals and beating Adna 1-0 (5-3 in shootout). The Mountain Lions are playing for the third straight year and eighth time since 2003 in the Final Four at state.
Friday Harbor blanked Brewster, 2-0, to reach state. Northwest 1B/2B League MVP Kaitlyn Domenech scored the first goal against the Bears (10-10).
Defending state champion Crosspoint Academy (14-2-1) of Bremerton takes on Adna (14-2-1) at 2 p.m. in the other semifinal game. Crosspoint topped Adna, 7-6, in a shootout in last year’s state semifinals. The Warriors, who are making a fourth straight appearance in the Final Four, edged two-time defending state champion Bear Creek, 1-0, for the 2013 state title.
This year, Crosspoint reached the semifinals with a 7-2 win over Life Christian on Nov. 15.
Crosspoint’s Des Doty scored five goals, giving her 50 goals for the season and 150 in her career. She was the SeaTac 1B League’s MVP. He father, Derrin Dotty, is the coach and was named the league’s Coach of the Year.
The losers play for third- and fourth-place at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The winners play for the state championship at 2 p.m.
